Today's Petrol Rate in India – 25 September 2026

Petrol prices in India are published every morning at 6:00 AM. This page brings together today's retail price of petrol per litre for more than 800 cities and every state and union territory, so you know what you will pay at the pump before you fill up. The tables above show each city's and state's rate along with the change from the previous day.

A litre of petrol does not cost the same everywhere in India. Cities in different states can differ by several rupees, and even towns within one state can differ by a few paise. Most of that gap comes from taxes, explained below.

How Petrol Prices Are Decided in India

The government stopped fixing the retail price of petrol in June 2010, when petrol prices were deregulated. Since 16 June 2017, the public-sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) — have followed daily dynamic pricing: rates are reviewed and published every day at 6 AM, based on international fuel prices and the rupee–dollar exchange rate. In practice, prices can stay unchanged for weeks or months at a stretch, and they move sharply when the Centre or a state changes its tax.

Private fuel retailers such as Jio-bp, Nayara Energy and Shell set their own prices, which usually stay close to the public-sector rates.

What makes up the price of one litre of petrol

Central excise duty and state VAT together make up a large part of what you pay at the pump. That is why a tax change moves the price far more than a small rise or fall in crude oil.

Why Petrol Prices Differ From State to State

• State VAT: the biggest reason. Each state sets its own VAT on petrol, and some also add a cess or surcharge. Because VAT is usually charged as a percentage on top of the base price and excise duty, a high-VAT state ends up noticeably costlier.
• Freight: places far from a refinery or fuel depot, such as hill states and the north-east, have higher transport costs.
• Local levies: a few states and cities add their own charges on top of VAT.

Central excise duty is the same across the country, so it does not explain these differences. It is also why people living near a state border sometimes cross over to fill up where petrol is cheaper.

Why Petrol Is Not Under GST

Petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, natural gas and crude oil are covered by India's GST law, but GST is not charged on them yet — the GST Council has not recommended a date to bring them in. Until it does, the Centre continues to levy excise duty and each state its own VAT. Moving petrol to GST would replace these two taxes with a single uniform one, but fuel VAT is one of the largest sources of revenue for the states, which is why the change has not happened so far.

Normal, Premium and E20 Petrol

• Regular petrol is what most pumps sell, and what the prices on this page refer to. All petrol sold in India has met BS-VI emission standards since 1 April 2020.
• E20 petrol is petrol blended with 20% ethanol, made mainly from sugarcane and grain. Under the government's Ethanol Blended Petrol programme, E20 is now the standard petrol at most pumps. Vehicles made in recent years are built for E20; if you drive an older vehicle, check the owner's manual or ask your service centre about compatibility.
• Premium petrol has a higher octane rating and added detergents — for example IndianOil XP95 and XP100, BPCL Speed and HPCL power. It costs more per litre and mainly benefits high-performance or high-compression engines. Most everyday cars, scooters and motorcycles run perfectly well on regular petrol.

How to Calculate Your Monthly Petrol Cost

Monthly petrol cost = (kilometres driven in a month ÷ mileage in km per litre) × petrol price per litre

For example, if you ride a motorcycle 1,000 km a month and it gives 45 km per litre, you use about 22.2 litres. At ₹100 a litre, that is roughly ₹2,222 a month. A car covering the same 1,000 km at 15 km per litre uses about 66.7 litres — around ₹6,667 a month at the same price. Swap ₹100 for today's rate in your city from the table above.

Tips to Save on Petrol

• Keep tyres at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer — under-inflated tyres waste fuel.
• Get your vehicle serviced on time; a clogged air filter or worn spark plugs reduce mileage.
• Accelerate and brake smoothly, and change gears at the right time instead of revving hard.
• Switch off the engine at long traffic signals and railway crossings.
• Remove unnecessary weight, and take off roof carriers you are not using.
• Combine errands into one trip, and carpool for your daily commute where you can.
• Use a fuel credit card or an oil company's loyalty programme to earn cashback or reward points on every fill.
